AI Search Citations Media: Do AI Answers Cite News Sites Now

The simple answer: yes, news sites get cited in AI responses, but how much AI relies on news and media outlets depends almost entirely on your industry, the specific AI engine, and the exact query prompt. Here is what the latest studies show and how to use it before you plan your next round of coverage to target AI search citations in media.

Do AI Models Cite News? Yes, Just Not Very Much

Goodie’s study of 31 million citations across 11 AI surfaces, recorded between October 2025 and July 2026, found that news makes up only about 1.3% to 1.9% of all AI citations in a given month.

Search Engine Journal’s analysis of 107 million AI answers highlighted the top ten citation sources for three industries: IT and solutions services, consumer goods, and communication services.

The study showed an average share of citation sources across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI overviews across three categories, including community and UGC, brand- and retail-owned, and independent editorial, which includes media, review directories, and Wikipedia as primary sources. For IT solutions, citations from media, review sites, and Wikipedia were 47%, and communication sources were 40%; for consumer goods, only 4%.

This shows that if you’re looking for ways to get cited in AI answers, you’ll have to change your playbook based on the industry you’re in. In IT services, third-party editorial and review sites carry real weight. In consumer goods, your own product and marketplace pages do most of the work.

However, another study by Muck Rack paints a different picture entirely. The May 2026 edition of What Is AI Reading? put earned media at 84% of citations across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Earned media includes journalism, academic research, government sources, encyclopedic sites, and third-party corporate content, so it includes not just news but other high-authority sources as well.

The gap comes down to prompt mix and how each team defines news. In any AI search citations media study, the prompts tested decide the story told.

Which AI Engines Cite News the Most?

The engine matters more than the outlet. In Goodie’s sample, Grok produces 23% of news citations, AI Overviews 19.5%, Gemini 13.5%, ChatGPT 11.9%, AI Mode 10.6%, DeepSeek 7.9%, and Claude 5.1%.

Even Google’s own surfaces disagree. An Ahrefs study of 540,000 query pairs (September 2025) found that AI Overviews and AI Mode cited the same URLs just 13.7% of the time, even though their answers were about 86% similar in meaning.

One study of more than 730,000 responses found AI Overviews and AI Mode share only 13.7% of their cited websites. So AI Overviews’ sources tell you very little about what AI Mode will cite for the same query. Track each surface separately, because AI search citations and media coverage in one engine don’t carry over to the next.

AI Citations Backlinks and the Outlets That Win

A small group of publishers takes most news citations. The top five publishers take 66% of news citations, while the top ten take 84%. Forbes alone holds 33%, with Reuters at 10%, Business Insider at 9%, and CNBC at 8%.

So where do AI citation backlinks fit? A link from one of these outlets is still beneficial for SEOs, and the page carrying it is readable by engines. However, the link creates an unproven citation, and AI search citation research so far leaves the question open.

How to Get Cited in AI Answers Through Media

You have to earn coverage on outlets that search engines already cite for your topic, on pages their crawlers can read to get cited in AI answers. Here are four steps outlined to help you keep your AI search citations media strategy doable:

  1. Pick outlets by engine and vertical. Run your own prompts in AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Gemini, and note which publishers show up. Leadership varies by vertical: in Goodie’s data, Forbes holds 86% of news citations in insurance, while Axios holds 57% in cybersecurity.
  2. Check that the page renders for a bot. Goodie found one top-five paper serving crawlers a 43-character JavaScript shell. Coverage that only exists after client-side rendering may never reach an engine.
  3. Pitch expert commentary and original data to that shortlist, and don’t default to the biggest names. Goodie found that traffic rank doesn’t predict citation rank (the New York Times is first in visits but sixth in citations) and that vertical specialists can out-cite far larger newsrooms in their lane. Build the pitch for the outlets your own prompt tests surface.
  4. Report by engine each month. Visits alone miss citations entirely, and the AI search citations media picture changes from one surface to the next.
