Back in March 2019, a reputed university from St. Louis, Missouri, needed to scale the link building campaign for its website. However, that’s easier said than done. Scalable link building, especially if you’re doing it in-house, takes a lot of time, effort and resources.

The client wanted to promote its Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctorate Online Degree Program and signed a 1-year contract with us.We had the game plan ready. For the next year, we were going to create high-quality backlinks on authoritative websites in the educational sphere and boost our client’s authority in the process.

Link building for a university website? Shouldn’t be that hard to do. Just use the university’s brand name and websites will happily link up, right?


Scalable link building is more nuanced than that. Our team used a two-pronged approach:

  • We helped push linkable assets like research studies conducted by students and professors. This paid off big time, as we were able to earn authoritative backlinks by approaching relevant websites related to those studies.
  • We also researched and identified the top 50 websites/publishers visited by our target market. By guest posting on those websites, we were able to get more eyeballs for our client, which worked like a charm!

The Results

  • Our team helped the client earn 150+ organic backlinks in less than a year. Apart from getting links from high-quality websites, we also removed toxic backlinks from the client’s link profile.
  • During this time period, Google rolled out 6 confirmed and 4 unconfirmed updates. While some of them were core updates that “punished” websites with low-quality content, our client’s website showed only positive results after each update. We saw that as a vote of confidence for our Google compliant link building strategy. Pretty cool, right?
  • Moreover, traffic to the client’s website almost doubled to 63,000, a whopping 96% increase.
  • The number of keywords in positions 1 to 3 increased by 68%. That took some doing. But with our link building efforts, we were able to push low ranking keywords up in the SERPs while also working on some other important keywords which were a bit more competitive.
