What is a Google update and should I be concerned about it?

Google uses complex algorithms to retrieve data from its search index and instantly deliver the best possible results for a query, ranked by relevance, on its search engine results pages (SERPs). Google updates refer to a change in those algorithms.

However, these updates are generally nothing to be concerned about – quite the opposite. The main function of the update is to improve the quality of user experience. A Google update also creates a faster user experience, which means faster search results, less spam, and less duplicate content. The optimization that comes with the update includes Google’s ability to detect spam content.

Google updates its algorithm thousands of times a year. Most of them are so minor that they go completely unnoticed. However, on occasion, the search engine rolls out major algorithmic updates, such as Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird (and more) which significantly impact how users view search results.
